While this many not fall under the category of indie music, I think she inspires a lot of indie singers, and perhaps even musicians. She’s the wonderful and perfect, Billie Holiday. I think it’s my family’s fault for exposing me to old jazz standards that I have come to obsess over in the form of my pitiful excuse for a vinyl collection. But this woman epitomizes the idea  of a love song or even a breakup song. There will never be anyone like her who will,so simplistically, put all  the emotions love and heartbreak has into a three minute song. And since Valentine’s Day is coming up and I plan on cuddling with my cat all evening, I will probably crank some Billie Holiday up and eat copious amounts of chocolate and watch movies where women rule and men suck. But nonetheless, this woman can sing, and it’s a sign of the times when the women that most little girls look up to are pop stars who lip sync their whole shows. And while she did do some drugs, she still could sing and sing damn well.Everyone should listen to some collection of Billie Holiday songs in order to hear how certain current indie songstresses (Adele, Florence Welch, etc) seem to possess this kind of vocal talent  and still make it relevant in todays world. I hope Billie Holiday stays relevant forever, and that she remains a legend until the day I die, otherwise I may be distraught.

Check out her “essential” album here.
